FISH AND CHIP BIRTHDAY SUPPER

yesterday in Manchester, the distinctive shape of the Enviro deckers, I may be tempted to share a photo of my birthday supper by tomorrow although I'm a bit full at present. Tomorrow we hope to get to Norwich and Ipswich, snow forcast by early next week, bang go the flowers, still the seedlings are cosy in the heated greenhhouse, must show you all a photo. Sean has made me a wonderful tan leather belt, one of Ireland's greatest craftsmen don't you know.

VICTORIA COACH STATION 75th SOME MORE PHOTOS

Today we started with a hard frost but it turned out sunny but then ended black. Busy at work then at home catching up editing these DVDs. Saturday at Victoria started a bit slow, mainly static, little action but a friendly welcome, much more on Sunday afternoon. I went to Marble Arch Sunday am then later Sloane Square also a bit near Victoria station. Sunday really cracked the flags , real spring weather.

MORE VICTORIA COACH STATION

we drove down early Saturday and had a stand just inside the main hall at departures, we stayed at the Premier Travel Inn at Kew, very nice location, great bar meal at the Waterman pub around the corner and charming local girl behind the bar. Mandy though had a tumble after we left, nothing to do with the wine I hasten to add.

An extract from Dave's book

Another busy week, getting stock readty for Victoria Coach Station tomorrow and Sunday , also gardening, the greenhouse is nearly full. Just to prove the book is coming along, now seeking publisher.

An extract from Dave's autobiography 1969

A delicacy on a lads night out was to call in at the Greek fish and chip ship near Stella’s antique emporium on Seaside and order Hampton and Chips, I’ll leave you to work that one out, oops didn’t mean for a double pun. Well what was happening out in the big world, John Lennon married Yoko Ono; oh boy did that have consequences. The new duo produced records which seem to have vanished from even folk memory. Don’t Worry Kyoko ( Cold Turkey Album 1969), We Love Daffodils, did they really exist, the landlord at the Birling Gap Hotel gave Dave the record free out of the juke box to stop him tormenting guests with it. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid, Raindrops falling in the pictures. Monty Python started on TV, with the homepride flower graders at half time.

Woodstock had happened for real in the USA and at home the first Isle of Wight festival in 1969 and again in 1970. Of much more immediate concern was the increasing price of fuel which I remember filling up at the cheap Murco garage opposite Marion’s as it reached an astronomic 5/- a gallon. You still had the choice of 2, 3 or 4star petrol which had the advantage of being understood by everyone, likewise gallons. Litres and metres were yet to be invented save in foreign parts occupied by Napoleonic hordes , spared our own free shores by the Martello towers which still guarded the coast from the Redoubt to Pevensey and even beyond. I bought a Ford Anglia 107E, green and cream, from Ben Wise and Hand Cross, it lasted a few months and fell to pieces then I had to put up with old cars, a succession of bangers.
If the years output makes you cry I would call you a liar but as ‘sad’ as that sounds in modern parlance I’m getting all dewy eyed. This was my year, the year after 68, the revolution was it there, had it happened, it’s very hard to judge when you are in the middle of it all. Driving down the seafront, windows open on a hot summer evening, the sea crashing to our right, a few pints for the worse, the engine throbbing before us, radio turned full maximum crackle, yes it was, downhill all the way from here, Thunderclap Newman ‘Something In The Air’, produced by Pete Townsend of The Who, the important mega group who never had a No1 in their own right strangely, but thanks for this one, it’s in my Desert Island disc selection. Call out the instigators Because there's something in the air We've got to get together sooner or later Because the revolution's here, and you know it's right And you know that it's right We have got to get it together We have got to get it together now Lock up the streets and houses Because there's something in the air We've got to get together sooner or later Because the revolution's here, and you know it's right And you know that it's right We have got to get it together We have got to get it together now Hand out the arms and ammo We're going to blast our way through here We've got to get together sooner or later Because the revolution's here, and you know it's right And you know that it's right We have got to get it together We have got to get it together now

For those with the inclination we started to hear about new causes to do with the social revolution which hitherto had been restricted to Vietnam and Tory miss rule. There was Women’s Liberation, sexual freedom, racial equality, international law, black power, anti colonial liberation movements. Pop music bounced around and provided plenty of entertainment, meaningless as most always had been, so why criticise. The Move had Blackberry Way whilst Amen Corner brought us (If Paradise Is) Half As Nice. Very much of it time and alluding to Sophia Loren ,Peter Sarstedt wrote and sang Where Do You Go To My Lovely? The ability to sing along all the words was vital, without these shared experiences we who missed the trauma of war would have little to bond the future folk memory. Big Dave’s foreman was I think Bert and he sipped at the Tally Ho! pub in Old Town opposite St Mary’s hospital. In the public bat there was a small cabinet which kept hot a selection of pies and our favourite, sausages on a stick. Dave must have thought it a worthwhile investment in time and money seeking out Bert in the evening as we regularly called by and got him a pint. Our own time was spent on the bar billiards table in the corner.

By now new Beatles records were receiving international style launches such as ‘Get Back’ performed live on the roof of the HMV building in London, this was however the last year as the tensions built and by the time The Ballad Of John & Yoko was released it was obvious the end had come for the Fab Four from the humble Cavern club in Liverpool. Future success, heartache and tragedy would follow as suited such mega stars, they had barely lasted the decade and even the Stones who would go on forever were now passé with the youth audience.

There were plenty of one hit wonders around in 1969, most of them are still in my mind, Zager & Evans had the thoughtful ‘In The Year 2525’ which contemplated our future and in a world of silly pop tunes was amazingly far thinking. Bubble gum music but none the worse for that was Credence Clearwater Revival with Bad Moon Arising, great on the dance floor. Smooching was courtesy of Je T’Aime…Moi Non Plus which achieved notoriety being banned by the beeb as too salacious, even the record label abandoned it due to embarrassment, looking back it was rather sweet. An all time low was reached towards the end of the year as Sugar Sugar by the Archies headed over from, America, originally performed on screen by cartoons characters thankfully only the music reached out shores. A special place in our hearts was held for Rolf Harris, he had a Christmas smash hit which topped the hit parade for 6 solid weeks bringing us the 1903 tale of Two Little Boys, reputedly harking back to events in the Crimean war. Eminently sing a long stuff, easy to take the piss out of but Rolf has the last laugh as an institution and prize draw at Glastonbury festivals.
Although I never had much interest in collecting records I remember big Dave dedicating to me his copy of David McWilliams song ‘The Days Of Pearly Spencer’. It was sarcastically inscribed ‘to Dave on the dole etc’. An interesting lyric about a down and out in Northern Ireland the singer writer David McWilliams recorded several albums in the late '60s in a style similar to Donovan, obviously influenced by Bob Dylan. McWilliams' "Days of Pearly Spencer," was his best song, with a dark edge, swirling violins, and a dab of psychedelia in the megaphone-distorted vocals on the song's chorus.

SHIPS THAT PASS

Well another busy day at work, then home potting up seedlings, a bit of telly and then rattle off a Manchester DVD from 1997-99. Usual day in other words, getting ready for Victoria coach station anniversary at the weekend, hope as many as possible will come along to see us.

BOOKS PRICED OUT PLENTY TO CLEAR

Well a really wet and windy night, each evening when I get home I do a spell potting on the plants, at least its warm in the heated greenhouse. I called round to Smith disposal shop today to pick up some books but they've put up the price 4 fold for paperbacks and doubled it for hardbacks so we've called it a day. Given the struggle to sell at rock bottom on e bay and the pickyness of people at rallies I think its good riddance, they weigh a ton to cart about. Hope to get rid of some South east books at Victoria Coach Station at the weekend. Hoping to have a whole string of Manchester bus DVDs ready for Boyle St at the end of the month.

NUDE PHOTO OF BEYONCE

Not really sure who or what Beyonce is or was but it appears a lot on You Tube, no worries, porn free zone here, just the occasional remark on You Tube along the lines of ' what the f***?'. If someone has no interest in transport why look at such a site such as ours, so lets hope we get our own back on a few today. John Bishop has gone broads band and has got t9o grips with his blog, best of luck with it John and all who read her. Today I went up to Penrith for work, took the camera hoping for some truck shots but the weather deteriorated so gave up but did get back in time to pick up the balance of my Four Oaks seedling order and had another hour potting up in the greenhouse. Tonight I hope to finish the first DVD in the Manchester series which covers 1996 the year of the IRA bomb, extracts should be on You Tube later tonight. By the way spell check on Blogger is hopeless, but what would they care. Had a super dinner tonight as usual courtesy of my Michelin should be stared chef Mandy who at this moment is doing the ironing between episodes of Coronation St, there you are what a lot of detail which will enable someone in a hundred years time to draw a pretty dismal picture of our lives. Talking of which a lot of headway on family history, new phone books added to Ancestry which have thrown up lots of Hardy and Hastings family details for Mandy's tree and I have another tranche of research courtesy Gill Blanchard on my Vincent ancestors. Photos appeared in the Old Grammarians Newsletter this quarter from an Eastbourne Grammar School trip which I'd scanned for my autobiography, again this made some progress last week although I haven't bored you all with it for a while, be warned!

TOPLESS IN SHROPSHIRE VERY FRIENDLY

Today we were in Shropshire, had super breakfast in Oswestry, young lass waiting on had ample charm which nearly spilt over the table, the only bus with a top was here courtesy Tanat Valley, otherwise saloons only, but oh so friendly crews at Oswestry, Shrewsbury and Telford. Weather mostly sunny and mild, a few clouds passing over quickly. Got home in time to wash cars and take a picture of the daffs! More buses in Shewsbury and Telford tomorrow.

NEARLY CAUGHT UP BUT BUSY AS EVER

I finally caught up with covers last night, the Swiss DVDs from 1991 / 92 are all on e bay together with other recent releases. You Tube London Trolleys clocked up is 1000th viewing, web sites had 32 thousand hits and You Tube overall over 10,000 views. Did a few pages on my autobiography, a bitterly cold Windy day. Got to finish a family film for a friend, Mandy arrived back 3 am this morning after a gruelling journey from Ireland.

VICTORIA COACH STATION ANNIVERSARY

We will be located inside with the PMP stand somewhere at the Victoria coach station 'do', there will be a display of buses at the station itself and other buses / overflow in Battersea Park. Due to restrictions on movements we won't arrive until 09.30 and then quickly set up. Sunday will have the greatest amount of preserved content. We will of course film as much of the event as possible. Much has moved on from the initial pans below so it should be a good weekend, expect some hefty crowds.

VICTORIA COACH STATION 75TH ANNIVERSARY !

The weekend of 10-11 March 2007 is the 75th anniversary of the commencement of services into Victoria Coach Station by "London Coastal Coaches". The modern Victoria Coach Station Ltd. will be commemorating this milestone by inviting owners of appropriate classic coaches to participate in a special event over that weekend. The London Transport Museum has commissioned some 'specialist' merchandise for the occasion, and VCS hope to lay on some catering and other 'entertainment'. It will also be an opportunity to view the plans for the proposed new coach station to be constructed on the site over the next few years.
Being a working coach station, space is at a premium and the organisers would want strict control over movements and timings, but they propose to make available an 'area' of 3 or 4 departure gates to accommodate the rally. So there are two ways in which participation can take place;
(1) Owners could arrange a 'trip' to London on the Saturday or Sunday, ensuring co-ordination of arrival / departure times. Providing the timings are pre-arranged, there is no reason why arrivals / departures could not go on all day, both days.
(2) Two or three (but no more) significant vehicles could be on static display in the coach station all day on each day. For this, it is hoped that one historic vehicle from each of the main original participants in London Coastal Coaches - i.e. Southdown, Maidstone & District and East Kent, will be displayed. Arrangements for this are progressing well.
A press release will be issued shortly to help spread the word but, in the first instance, please Email me ( at Events Calendar not pmp) and they will be able to put you in touch with the organisers. The list of attending vehicles is growing daily.
This will be a very special (and unrepeatable) event. Don't miss it, and please bring your Eastern National L5G / Southdown Harrington Cavalier / BMMO C5 / Thames Valley Lodekka / South Wales Weymann Fanfare / East Kent Reliance / Royal Blue MW5G etc. etc. to the party. And don't forget, you heard it from the Classic Buses Website first !
Click here for a vehicle entry form.

Well look forward to seeing you all there. Amongst other things I'll need to sort hotel, anyone used Travelodge, aren't they the pits, good old Charlie slagged off McDonalds yesterday, may I give him my heartfelt support, they should certainly be banned along with other US imports like baseball caps, trainers, hoodies, guns etc!

Last night I got on well and have finished the Sheffield and Rotherham films and also done DVD covers, put clips on You Tube, sat down to watch Casualty and on came football, well I ask you, aren't there enough channels with sport on 24 hours a day.

AUDLEY TRAVEL RIP OFF MERCHANTS

photos courtesy Greg Bubb, well the Best Ever London Country programme is wrapped up, just doing the cover hence the photos, its posted on You Tube as well.

Running off the Yorkship material ready to edit.
my comments on Rotherham struck home with an inhabitant! Someone I know well enough for an honest word or two, was he aggrieved, well not really as GD said

'Re your comments on your blog about Rotherham, all I can say is that you don't have to live in the s***hole!!

It has gone downhill rapidly in the last 5 years, we now have more eastern Europeans, than Eastern Europe

Hope to see you & Mandy at a few rallies through the summer'

a bit more honest feedback would go down a treat.

Having hassles sorting Xmas trip, given up on Audley an outfit another bunch which has gone downhill since it was Asian Journeys, didn't like it when I said they were about £1000 over the odds on their quote but declined to justify it at all, as I said to them if I got a quote for a new kitchen it would be broken down to materials, labour etc, if I buy shopping in Tescos I get a receipt broken down, rip of Britain with rip off companies.

What about the East Anglia transport Museum at Carlton Colville, does it exist, I've phoned, faxed, written, sent numerous messages, SAEs , never a reply, what did I do to upset them so? Not another of the 'silent' enthusiasts. Thank god I've got a pint of Guinness and a little bit of perspective on the bus hobby.

DONCASTER BUS STATION

Sunday, battling through the sound effects on London Country DVD, still looking after myself, Mandy in Ireland. Another dull damp day, the garden is too wet to get out in although needs spring tidy up. Yesterday in Doncaster, there's a new bus station, not signposted anywhere, its actually not that far from the old one, only difference there is no chance of photography there, black hole of Calcutta job! Still the usual roundabout gave some action and looked nice with the spring pansies. Not a place for the faint hearted, Doncaster is the gusset of Britain's knickers, if you want the full third world experience without travelling come here.

SATURDAY SOUTH YORKSHIRE

Today I went filming at Sheffield, Rotherham and Doncaster. The weather wasn't ideal but I got two hours of film which isn't bad for this time of year. Sheffield wasn't very exciting bus wise, got some nice vantage points though and only limited amounts of hassle which is to be expected, after all this is our all time worse place for trouble over the years, too much poverty, drugs and too many feral children. Then on to Rotherham which defies description, how people can call parts of Romania and Bulgaria when we've got this lot I don't know. Lots of other bus photographers around but the usual situation they wouldn't chat, what is it that makes most so introverted! The weather looked like rain but it din't, still got views at bus station without hassle so a plus point there. I'll deal with Doncaster tomorrow.

LONDON COUNTRY BUSES

Well another long evening, this time I recopied some of the films I did the night before as there was some light intrusion on the video, next I did the rest of the films sitting around, this included a couple of 16mm jobs, they turned out to be rubbish, very frustrating getting all the gear out ready but there you go! I then turned my attention to the London Country film, 57 minutes collated, I'll add a few more scenes to take it over the hour but its nearly ready to start tweaking the images, the sound takes longest.
Mandy being away it's self help in the kitchen albeit the meals have been left in the freezer, still forgot my lunch for work today , typical, still no sign of my car back from garage, still using hired Picasso people carrier, horrid great thing.
Tomorrows filming undecided but probably Doncaster, Sheffield and or Leeds. Forecast light showers otherwise sunny, these locations should be ok except Leeds. Not too many orders to deal with, everything is going out by return of post.

LONDON COUNTRY BEST EVER

Last night I copied some cine film including the remainder of the London Country hires from John Bishop, I also got stuck into Paul Gainsbury's cine collection which as well as family footage contained an hour on railways, mainly end of steam in England era. This all went on until quite late, it had been a bitch of the day with car broken down and Mandy leaving for Ireland. Still hope to be on schedule for finishing London Country this coming weekend and to have several Manchester area videos converted to DVD next week. Not sure where filming will take place this weekend, waiting for weather forecasts to settle on a target. Got a trade order from Ian Allan Birmingham completed before bed but very tired today, hoping for my car back later on.
