TASTEY BITS FROM SHEFFIELD

some still from Stuart Cook's superb Sheffield cine film which forms the basis for our latest two archive releases, the second of which is being put onto DVD as we speak, as ever I still produce video for the diminishing band who adhere to the old ways. There are some amazing scenes of the bus hires in the second volume, both very well worth obtaining and on sale from now. Next week after our Nice trip I'll get all the Polish, Ukraine and Kaliningrad stuff edited plus the Black Country and trucks at Immingham , and I suppose with luck Nice. Thus this is my last blog until Tuesday on our return, its throwing it down outside, coled and dark, a typical English summer you couldv say suppose.
We are progressing plans for our China trip next year, friend martin Rickiit has come up with a Chinese contact for the trip.

TRUCK IT AGAIN

a while since we had a truck selection, near Immingham docks on my dinner break returning fro North East.
A rare sunny spell and again today very mixed and windy. Busy at work , helping with a childrens DVD which may take a little time next week, finished off first Sheffield archive 80s volume courtesy Stuart Coooke now starting second. Then afterwards I'll get catching up today on recent trips.
Someone is stealing drain covers in Knutsford, leading the Guardian this morning, still important if its a gaping hole outside your house.
The cover for my book is now running late.

CATCHING UP AND FALLING BEHIND

Newcastle trolley as Black Country fiasco last Saturday, the 'non' gala day
a wet museum, everyone was round the corner at the chip shop
The Belfast trolley worked the first shift then handed over to the London vehicle
Lily time at 17 Birchwood, and then the front garden , since these shots it has filled out more and looks quite good despite terrible winds at weekend and dry spells between heavy showers
lots done, the outside lights all fixed, new hose real fitted, lawn mower off for a service, kitchen people coming to sort out wonky units and doors tomorrow. Working with lots of people on family history around Vincent amily. Also working with small film company on a children's bus feature. Up at 4.30 this morning and in Teesside for work, stopped off for lunch and managed a truck film then back to Ellesmere port, hair cut and back to start work here again, it never ends!!

AT LAST THE STORM HAS ENDED

one of just three trolleys we saw move at Black Country on Saturday, it cost £25 entry plus fuel to get there, enduring 5 hours of wet miserable weather would have been bearable if more trolleys had taken part in what was supposed to be a gala do, to rub salt in the wound I'm told that 10 ran on Sunday plus the tram . Mandy spent the day reading the paper in the car, no an event I would ever return to. The steam engines / rollers did lighten the gloom
Tomorrow I'm up in the North East for work, tonight clipped hedges and friend David Bland fixed all the exterior lights which had gone kaput.Hoping to make a start on the sound on the Sheffield 80s archive film later.

WHAT A DISMAL WEEKEND THAT WAS

with time on my hands a double dose of blog and a last visit to Poland with Lodz, the largest metre gauge tram system which was pretty well cut in half with a massive upgrading underway, avoid the grand Hotel there, it must have been good a century ago but not now.

I managed to edit the first hour of Stuart Cooke's Sheffield archive mainly 1980s through to building of tramway. Sound to put on tomorrow plus coverage of weekends non events

BLACKPOOL FARCE THIS MORNING

Tychy a fortnight ago, not much running on a Sunday but much changed from my 1992 visit

before that also Sunday was Cczestochowa where a limited Sunday service was in operation, a disapointing day weather wisde, a gate guardian at the station.

back to the present, up at 6 and off to Blackpool in the vain hope that they would have lovcated stands in the building due to the severe weather warning, after watching stands and stick destroyed for other traders and societies we decided the safest and most sensible thing was to come back home so back with car unloaded by 9.30, bit of a blow but we never do much at this event anyway, pleasant if its sunny but Mandy has a conference in Blackpool later in the year and I should be able to update that weekend. Meanwhile lots of work editing Sheffield archives, and eventually the east European trip all lined up to fill in the day.
Another rethink on rallies, with price of fuel and continual poor weather we may cut back further on events.

POOR SHOW AT BLACK COUNTRY MUSEUM

warm dry weather like our visit to Katowice seems to be but a memory now, a happier note though, a pleasant visit although some grumpy tram drivers and rude local enthusiats who stood in front of us when we were taking picture. A good hotel the Diamant near the station although what stupid idiots would name two hotels the same, we never did find the one we were booked at. merely hanged to the one we found first. Food was good and breakfast plus draught Guinness. The Bytom shuttle is the citys only tourist attraction. We had a miserable pizza Polish style in a supposedly Italian restaurant should have stuck to the splendid little hotel. Very nice chap driving the Bytom shuttle, well used to photographers I'd say. Did I remember to mention the border crossing into Poland from Ukraine, done by foot, we nearly got crushed to death as a load of beer bellied louts stampeded the border point, noit for the feint hearted although quicker than several days waiting to cross in a lorry, there's Polish efficiency for you.

Well today we made the mistake of going to the Black Country Living Rip off museum where you need a mortgage to get in, the advertised ( well almost advertised, more like word of mouth) trolleybus weekend to commemorate 21 years of trolley operation , there turned out to be just three vehicles in action during the 5 miserable wet hours we spent there. Very few people attended although amongst those there were people from as far as Germany, pity they couldn't have put on a better show, I wouldn't go again, this was the all time low for the event enlivened only by a few road rollers which gave some added interest and movement. Trolleys from Newcastle, London and Belfast were all splendidly interesting but after 5 hours even that gets a bit much.
Once we were booked to do a film show for them on the Saturday evening, John brought the projector and films from Sussex, we came down from Cheshire, they just ignored us, so then what should you expect, yet another little clan who do worthwhile work but lads if you want paying public to cough up hard earned shekels you need to put on a better act.

Tomorrow's horror story is likely to be Totally Wet Transport at Blackpool where dire warnings of gales and severe weather are in force, perhaps we'd better stay in bed.

Thought for the day, with all our troops in Afghanistan and Iraq how come we can't find one tiny little bullet for that prat Mugabe in Rhodesia? Come to think of it why don't we take back what was ours and gain a bit of respect again instead of being apologists for the yanks. JUst an old liberal at heart of course, perhaps it will be sunny next week in Nice and I'll be nicer to go with it.

OF TIME AND TIDE AND BAD WEATHER

happy memories of the Dublin pub in Lvov last week, well its all over till the next trip which is actually very soon, Nice in France at the beginning of July
Dave's trademark Guinness
from Germany and Austria what a super tram scene at Krakow and not a stag party in sight, a wonderful sunny day before we headed over to Ukraine

tomorrow were are going to Black Country trolleybus weekend, weather in afternoon may be less wet, Sunday at Blackpool looking as if it will be dry after all so lash out on some fuel and join us there.

JUST THE TICKET FROM POLAND

Turnopol Ukraine, google blog playing hell tonight, given up loading more pictures after much frustration, guess for all their dosh it still has its moments, throw some coffee over the computer it works wonders, failing that kick it. What a super place, great weather as well as these lovely old Skoda 9Tr trolleys, what a treat, we even had a depot visit. As ever Ukraine was delightful, one of my favourite counties. Turnopol is built around an artificial lake, almost touristy!
ah, one of Mandy's super currys sorted out the blogger problem, yummy, after tidying work in garden, all bedding complete, just weeding in borders required.
Saturday if weather ok Black Country trolley weekend then Sunday Blackpool , again rain forecast but what the hell come along anyway.

MORE FROM EASTERN EUROPE LAST WEEK

some last shots from Kaliningrad that most interesting Russian enclave within the confines of surrounding EU countries.

in murky early morning weather on a single track section through the suburbs
our final port of call in Poland was Lublin, the last electric system I had never previously visited and we had the good fortune to meet a couple of local enthusiasts with whom we enjoyed a pleasant evening both at their apartment and at a cafe, marred only by yet another tedious European football match going on.

At present I'm working through a 1970s UK rail feature on material by Bob Dalton
